From What Is A Freethinker?, a "non-tract" by the Freedom From Religion Foundation, Inc.:

"[A] freethinker [is] a person who forms opinions about religion on the basis of reason, independently of tradition, authority, or established belief. ... No one can be a freethinker who demands conformity to a bible, creed, or messiah. To the freethinker, revelation and faith are invalid, and orthodoxy is no guarantee of truth."

In plain English, that means that I do not accept any so-called sacred writing as revealed truth. I do not accept the presumption that there exists a higher authority, force, or god controlling what's going on in the universe around me or that will judge me when I'm dead. I do not believe that there are spirits or angels among us, walking around, or intervening in happenings in the universe. I do not believe in an afterlife nor in reincarnation.

I reject the assumption that an atheist cannot live a moral life. My own guiding moral principle is that I live and let live, and I expect others to do the same in regards to my own beliefs and actions. Wiccans, Confucians, and Christians will recognize this principle as, "An it harm none, do what thou wilt"; "Do not do unto others what you would not want done to you"; and the "Golden Rule."

You can read more about Freethought, humanism, atheism, the separation of church and state, and other topics (generally) counter to religionist belief at web sites such as The Secular Web and the Freedom From Religion Foundation. Some of the more famous authors on Freethought topics include Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Margaret Sanger, Bertrand Russell, Thomas Alva Edison, Albert Einstein, and Thomas Paine.

I welcome e-mail (opadit at gmail dot com) related to Freethought, but please be respectful and understand that attempts to proselytize to me about your sect and beliefs will be unfruitful. If you are a Christian and you would still like to witness to me, please take the time to fill out my questionnaire first.
