The Mask of Motherhood: How Becoming a Mother Changes Everything and Why We Pretend It Doesn't; Susan Maushart; ISBN: 0140291784 I think this is the best goddam book about mothering that has ever been written.

How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk; Adele Faber, Elaine Mazlish, Kimberly Ann Coe; ISBN: 0380811960 I use this one when Eleanor won't stop repeating the same phrase over and over again. It has helped me communicate with her better.

Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn; Penny Simkin, Janet Whalley, Ann Keppler; ISBN: 0671741829 I give away new copies of this book regularly to my newly pregnant friends. I can't recommend it enough! It's the antidote to What to Expect When You're Expecting; skip that and read this one instead.

The Hip Mama Survival Guide; Ariel Gore; ISBN: 0786882328

The Baby Book; William Sears, Martha Sears; ISBN: 0316779059 Eleanor is being raised according to principles of the attachment parenting philosophy. It's working for us.

The Complete Book of Breastfeeding; Marvin S. Eiger, Sally Wendkos Olds; ISBN: 0553580744 (N.B., I have an older, unrevised version of this book. I haven't read the new edition.)

Your Baby and Child: From Birth to Age Five; Penelope Leach; ISBN: 0375700005 (Again, I had an older edition of this book. I understand that the newest edition is more open to cosleeping and other aspects of attachment-style parenting, which would make me recommend a newer edition strongly.)

Baby and Child Care; Benjamin Spock, Stephen J. Parker, Steven Parker; ISBN: 0671537628 (No, really. The sections on breastfeeding are accurate and useful, and the very first message, "Trust yourself," is always important to hear. We've ignored the parts on schedules, crying it out, and hardening our hearts, though. I had the 1980's and 1990's editions, but I saw in a TV interview that Dr. Spock recommended vegetarian diets for toddlers and children in the latest edition of the book, just before he passed away.)
